No, the world is not going to come to a crashing halt in 2012:) The Mayans saw time differently than we do.Our culture sees time as being linear (as in a time line) One year comes before another and it never goes back around. It's a straight line for us. But to the Mayans, time was cyclic, like the seasons or the day. Just because summer is over doesn't mean there will never be another summer, it just means you have to wait for the cycle to complete itself before it can be summer again. It won't be the same summer, but it's still summer. For the Mayans, this is how time worked. So the end of the cycle means the end of an old era and the beginning of a new one.Interpreting the end of the Mayan calendar to mean the end of the world would be like future archaeologists going through our ruins, finding an old calendar and then announcing that the world is going to end on December 31. Nonetheless, people are still going to be increasingly nervous at 12/21/12 approaches, just like they got nervous when 1/1/00 was approaching. Y2K came and went rather uneventfully. So will this.
